Federation House is a building owned by The Co-op Group that was sat waiting for a new lease of life for years. The eight-storey building covers 71,300 sq ft and was previously used as a warehouse, showrooms, offices and training facilities.
The building was redeveloped in partnership with NOMA in 2017, primarily to relocate the Co-op Digital team to the top two floors. We helped create a place where they could naturally collaborate and generate new ideas. But the project soon grew arms and legs as the building offered so much more potential.
"We felt that Sheila Bird really understood the mission that we had here and what we were trying to create. They bring incredible ideas to the table at every meeting"Victoria Howlett
School of Thought
The idea was to open up the rest of the six floors and create a digital community, an innovation ecosystem for Manchester. This way the building could play much more of a vital role to catalyse innovation in the city and provide space for other companies who share the Co-op values of social responsibility, openness, honesty and transparency.
Those values aligned with global software consultancy Thoughtworks and as they had a Manchester presence on their radar, Federation seemed like a natural fit . We worked with Thoughtworks to create an open and versatile canvas that offered them the flexibility they needed to work in an agile and constantly evolving way.
